Surah al- Hujurât: 6, suggests that the perceptual trap able to make a person to fall into ungodliness. Thus, the information it carries has the potential to damage the knitting of brotherhood. Allah gives anticipation to avoid the perceptual trap.
“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy… “(Surat al-Hujurât: 10)
Brotherhood enhancer is the faith, and deterrent of the split of brotherhood is the effort to settle brotherhood and to fear Allah. That is the main foundation of brotherhood (solidity of ukhuwah).
Furthermore, Allah gives the device to reach piety, ultimate of gloriousness. That is, through verses 11 and 12.
First, Allah forbids the faithful to pride themselves. Because it will provoke an act to humiliate others.
This may happen, because most men, especially the clergy sometimes boast of their social status. This could trigger hostility because of the attitude of disparaging and demeaning others. These things sometimes have done by women who boast of nasab (a patronymic or series of patronymics), heredity, husband, and children or also their social status.
Secondly, Allah also forbids believers from denouncing their people. In this verse Allah speaks of it as “do not reproach yourself”. Because to criticize others is like hitting water in a jar in front of us. The spark will return to ourselves.
If someone cursed the father or the mother of someone else, then it means that he cursed his father or his own mother, because the man who was scolded will reply with more scathing insults.
Third, Allah forbids the faithful to play his brother with a bad nickname or title.
Fourth, Allah forbids the faithful to indulge in prejudices. Because the prejudice is uncertain or unclear. Moreover, usually the prejudice is about the disgrace someone that should be covered.
Fifth, Allah forbids to spying (tajassus). When prejudice is indulging, it is unnoticeable, often followed up by spying and tracing the truth of issues that had been a rumor. This thing could destroy ukhuwah and fall into the act of looking for people’s mistakes.
Sixth, Allah forbids backbiting (ghibah). Allah gives a bad parable for backbiting. That it is similar to one eating the flesh of his brothers, even more than that; corpse of human. The ugliness is happening by gossiping about issues that are sometimes unclear. Even if it is true, then it should not spread everywhere.
The Prophet (PBUH) once asked his Companions: Do you know what is ghibah?” They said: “God and His Messenger know best.” He (S) said: “It is to mention about your brother that which he detests.” Someone asked: “O Messenger of Allah, what if that which is mentioned of him should actually be in him?” He replied: “Know that when you mention that which is in him, you have committed his ghibah, and when you mention that which is not in him, then you have slandered him.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmizi and Nasa’i).
The six things above are the tools of piety to achieve the ultimate of gloriousness that Allah described in the next verse. Completed with the seventh formula that is: know each other and strengthen the relationship, as confirmed in verse 13.
Allah mentions diversity in society. It all started from two different creatures, male and female.
From both, humans spread to various parts of the world. Tribes and nations. Different languages and cultures. The purpose of this distinction is to enrich insight and brotherhood by getting to know each other. Not to boast or make fun of each other. Culture know each other will mature and enrich the science. If this friendship is abandoned, it will make the world lose love and be filled with envy and enmity.
