“Diplomacy War” for Palestine

To achieve the independence of a nation, certainly must involve all parties, both internal (domestically) and the international community. The struggle of the Indonesian people against the various colonies by Portuguese, British, Dutch to Japanese, was an obvious example of the history of successful independence. How many victims of various generations, until finally get what is dreamed. International recognition is needed when proclamation was echoed.

After the independence achieved, Indonesia still struggles to defend it, by seeking support from other countries. KH. Agus Salim, Muhammad Hatta and Muhammad Natsir were listed as one of the international negotiators for the independence of the Indonesian nation. Egypt and Palestine were the countries that they visited and have large shares toward the independence of Indonesia.

Palestinians do various ways to achieve independence. Its people valiantly resist the illegal occupiers inside their homeland, while the Palestinian authorities seek by negotiate and diplomacy ways. Both are complementary to each other.

Palestine currently needs international political support to gain their independence. After 69 years of occupation (since May 1948), support has come to the issuance of various resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly. Even, on 29 November 2012, General Assembly grants Palestine non-member observer. However, resolutions issued by the United Nations General Assembly related to Palestine, have never been obeyed by Israel. Because Israel is protected by the United States (US) and the United Nations is an international organization established by the winner countries of the Second World War, especially the US. Israel from its establishment till now become a golden child of the United States. As long as the US is still supporting Israel, as long as it is also a struggle in Palestine will be continue.

Recently, one of Jordan’s top human rights commissioners named Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein is preparing to publish a list of US and World companies working in Israeli Settlements in the Palestinian territories. This publication is planned to be announced by the end of 2017. The list of names of these companies will certainly affect their investment if publicly known.

Therefore, the US threatened to stop funding assistance to the UN Human Rights Council, if they disclose the name lists of US companies. US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley has sent a threatening letter if they publish “black list” of international companies engaged in the commercial sector in Israeli settlements. Israeli diplomatic officials at the UN also have a mission to thwart this publication.

Israel does not remain silent with the action plan of the UN Human Rights Council. Israel threatens international institutions that adopt the “black list” will be reviewed or withdrawn its work permit in the occupied territories. The Israeli Ministry of Strategy also mentioned that issuing these names makes the UN as a BDS organization (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions), an international movement campaigning for boycotting, investment withdrawals and sanctions against Israel.

Is the UN Human Rights Council willing and able to publish a list of world companies working in Israeli settlements? If they do not announce it, it means that the UN Human Rights Council will lose its diplomacy. If they announced, would the world countries boycott those companies for their actions by helping Israeli occupation over Palestine? We will see the “Diplomacy War for Palestine” until the end of this year. (Salman Alfarisy)
