In recent weeks, Palestinian media has been re-enacted with the agenda of negotiations between the two main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah. This time the negotiation again mediated by the Egypt, which took place on Tuesday, (10/10/2017) by bringing together its both representatives in Cairo.
Many sides have pessimism of this reconciliation effort, since it was not the first time for both factions. Indeed, after the dispute between the two largest factions in Palestine occurred, after the parliamentary elections in 2006, indirectly Palestine does not have a central government. The West Bank is dominated by Fatah, and Gaza Strip is predominantly by Hamas. Since then various reconciliation efforts have continued but ended up failing.
The division happened because of the classical reasons, that is the rejection of Zionist Israel and its allies over the victory of Hamas in the Palestinian elections. With claims on behalf of the international world, Israel and its allies require Hamas to recognize its sovereignty and respect the Israeli-Palestinian accord. Terms that Hamas faction rejected at the time. From there it begins drama suppressing Hamas in the West Bank, having to survive in the Gaza Strip since 2006 until now.
Hamas needs to pay the consequences of its choice. Ostracized by Fatah factions which used to coordinating with Israeli illegal occupation, and suppressed through military blockades and aggressions. Palestinian residents in the Gaza Strip are also affected. Upset by Hamas’s persistence on resistance, in 2008, 2012 and 2014 the Zionist Israel with its military power bombarded the Gaza Strip. Thousands of civilians were killed and thousands of buildings were devastated. Until now there are 2 million people have been imprisoned in the blockade of the Gaza Strip, and a third of the population lives below the poverty line and aid-dependent.
More than a decade ongoing, the Gaza Strip continues to experience a variety of humanitarian crises, ranging from water shortage, electricity shortages, a worsening economy, coupled with the closing of the only access to the outside world by Egyptian authorities, which adds to the burden of the Palestinian people there.
Many people are wondering, will this reconciliation be achieved? Given in recent times, Hamas is reportedly ready to hand the Gaza Strip administrative to the Palestinian Authority, which is none other consist of Fatah members. The relented manner that this faction takes needs to be appreciated for the return of a normal life in the Gaza Strip. But will this stance extend to the terms of reconciliation set by Israel and its allies, namely recognizing the sovereignty of the state of Israel and disarming the arms of Hamas’s military wing? This is a big question. But if we observe the attitude of Hamas over the years, the group has been hard-nosed to the Zionist Israel, opposing the illegal occupation over the Palestinian land on which there is the holy Masjid al-Aqsa.
But if Israel imposes such conditions, then the reconciliation is only a dream, because there will be a lot of pressure especially for Hamas to succumb. Moreover, Israel, US and the EU still put this popular resistance organization into the terrorist list, which means whatever that they do (Hamas), its existence will be eliminated, at least the space will be narrowed.
On the other hand, it is necessary to realize that unity is a hope to restore Palestinian sovereignty. Let the occupiers and their allies decline the presence of the united government of Palestine, but the integrity of the nation is a priority, with it all the problems of the children of the nation could be overcome together, until the achievement of a sovereign Palestinian state, live free from all forms of colonization.
